    Summary

Diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy often experience hearing loss. This study found 55% of diabetic patients had sensorineural hearing impairment, suggesting a link between diabetes and auditory nerve damage.

    Area of Science:

    • Audiology
    • Neurology
    • Endocrinology

    Background:

    • Diabetes mellitus is a systemic disease with numerous complications.
    • Peripheral neuropathy is a common complication of diabetes.
    • Auditory system integrity in diabetic patients is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate audiometric hearing function in diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy.
    • To compare hearing thresholds between diabetic patients and healthy controls.
    • To explore the potential relationship between diabetes, neuropathy, and hearing loss.

    Main Methods:

    • Audiometric testing was performed on 20 diabetic patients with peripheral neuropathy.
    • Hearing thresholds were assessed across 11 frequencies.
    • Results were compared to a control group of age-matched normal subjects.

    Main Results:

    • 11 out of 20 (55%) diabetic patients exhibited symmetrical sensorineural hearing loss.
    • Significantly higher hearing thresholds were observed in the diabetic group at nine of the 11 tested frequencies.
    • No prior history of hearing loss or ear disease was reported by the affected patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Diabetes mellitus, particularly with peripheral neuropathy, is associated with sensorineural hearing loss.
    • Hearing impairment in diabetics may stem from neuropathy affecting the auditory nerve.
    • Routine audiometric screening may be beneficial for diabetic patients.
