Summary

Two cases of Helicobacter rappini bacteremia were identified in young homosexual men. This includes the first reported human immunodeficiency virus-positive patient with H. rappini infection.

Background:

Helicobacter rappini is a bacterium not commonly associated with human infections.
Bacteremia, a serious bloodstream infection, requires prompt identification and treatment.

Observation:

Two young homosexual men presented with symptoms indicative of bacteremia.
Blood cultures revealed a spiral, gram-negative bacterium with characteristic bipolar sheathed flagella, identified as Helicobacter rappini.

Findings:

This study documents the first reported cases of bacteremia caused by Helicobacter rappini in humans.
One of the cases involved a patient who was also positive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

These findings expand the known spectrum of human pathogens.

Further research is needed to understand the transmission and clinical significance of Helicobacter rappini in humans, particularly in immunocompromised individuals.

Clinicians should consider Helicobacter rappini in the differential diagnosis of bacteremia in at-risk populations.
