Summary

Researchers identified zephyranthine and 1,2-O-diacetylzephyranthine from fresh Cyrtanthus elatus bulbs. Two-dimensional NMR techniques were used to fully characterize these and three other known alkaloids.

Area of Science:

  • Phytochemistry
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Natural Product Chemistry

Background:

  • Cyrtanthus elatus (fire lily) is a plant species known for its potential medicinal properties.
  • Alkaloids are a diverse group of naturally occurring organic compounds that contain at least one nitrogen atom.
  • Previous research has explored the chemical constituents of various Cyrtanthus species.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To isolate and identify alkaloid compounds from the alcoholic extract of fresh Cyrtanthus elatus bulbs.
  • To fully characterize the structure of isolated compounds using advanced spectroscopic methods.
  • To contribute to the understanding of the phytochemical profile of Cyrtanthus elatus.

Main Methods:

  • Extraction of fresh Cyrtanthus elatus bulbs using an alcoholic solvent.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Isolation of compounds using chromatographic techniques.
  • Structure elucidation of isolated compounds, including zephyranthine (1) and 1,2-O-diacetylzephyranthine (2), using one-dimensional (1H and 13C) and two-dimensional (2D) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
  • Main Results:

    • Five known alkaloids were isolated from the alcoholic extract.
    • Zephyranthine (1) and 1,2-O-diacetylzephyranthine (2) were identified as two of the isolated compounds.
    • Complete assignment of 1H and 13C NMR spectra for compounds 1 and 2 was achieved through the application of 2D NMR techniques.

    Conclusions:

    • The study successfully identified key alkaloid constituents from Cyrtanthus elatus.
    • The detailed NMR analysis provides valuable structural information for zephyranthine and its derivative.
    • This research enhances the phytochemical knowledge base of the Cyrtanthus genus.
