Area of Science:

  • Surgical procedures
  • Gastrointestinal surgery
  • Preventive medicine

Background:

  • Prophylactic appendectomy remains a topic of debate.
  • Appendectomies are sometimes performed preventively, particularly in cases involving incisional hernias where future adhesions could complicate a later appendectomy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the reasons for and outcomes of prophylactic appendectomies.
  • To assess the safety and impact of prophylactic appendectomy on perioperative complications.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis of 64 prophylactic appendectomy cases.
  • Histopathological examination of all resected specimens.
  • Comparison of perioperative complications between patients with and without prophylactic appendectomies.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Prophylactic appendectomy was performed in 23 patients with incisional hernias to prevent future surgical difficulties.
  • The additional procedure did not negatively impact perioperative complication rates.
  • Histopathological analysis was conducted on all removed appendix specimens.

Conclusions:

  • Prophylactic appendectomy can be safely performed.
  • The procedure is advisable under optimal conditions, especially in patients with incisional hernias.
  • Further research may clarify the indications and long-term benefits.
