Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic surgery
  • Medical imaging
  • Robotics in medicine

Context:

  • Total hip replacement (THR) is common in Germany, with a growing number of young recipients.
  • Aseptic loosening necessitates revision arthroplasty for young patients within 15 years.
  • Preoperative planning challenges arise from anatomical changes, increasing complication risks.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of CT-based preoperative planning and robot-assisted surgery for total hip replacement.
  • To address the need for precise implant fixation in young patients prone to revision surgery.

Summary:

  • CT imaging provides detailed cortical visualization for enhanced preoperative planning.
  • Robot-assisted surgery enables precise execution of the surgical plan, improving anatomical prosthesis placement.

  • Preliminary results indicate favorable anatomical positioning and reduced perioperative complications.
  • Impact:

    • This approach may reduce revision arthroplasty rates by ensuring accurate initial implant placement.
    • Improved surgical precision can lead to better long-term outcomes for total hip replacement patients.
    • Advances in computer-guided surgery offer potential for safer and more effective orthopedic procedures.
