Rectosigmoidal mucosal puckering and diverticulosis.

J A Ritchie

Diseases of the Colon and Rectum

    PubMed
    Summary

Rectosigmoidal mucosal puckering, often seen in colonoscopies, is linked to aging and diverticulosis. This condition may precede diverticulosis and indicates a thickened bowel wall, suggesting a high-residue diet is beneficial.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Colorectal Health
    • Digestive System Physiology

    Background:

    • Diverticulosis is commonly associated with thickened muscle walls in the pelvic colon.
    • Rectosigmoidal mucosal puckering is frequently observed during sigmoidoscopy.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the correlation between rectosigmoidal mucosal puckering, patient age, diverticulosis, and irritable colon syndrome symptoms.
    • To determine if mucosal puckering is a precursor to diverticulosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of 278 colonic motility studies.
    • Correlation of mucosal puckering with patient age, diverticulosis presence, and irritable colon syndrome symptomatology.
    • Assessment of bowel wall resistance to distention in patients with and without mucosal puckering.

    Main Results:

    • Mucosal puckering prevalence increased with age, mirroring diverticulosis rates but appearing approximately 25 years earlier.
    • No correlation was found between persistent mucosal puckering and irritable colon syndrome clinical characteristics.
    • Bowel wall resistance to distention was significantly higher in individuals with puckered rectosigmoidal mucosa.

    Conclusions:

    • Rectosigmoidal mucosal puckering is likely caused by underlying muscle thickening.
    • Mucosal puckering appears to be a precursor to diverticulosis.
    • Patients exhibiting mucosal puckering may benefit from a high-residue diet.
