Summary

Insufficient sleep affects 20.4% of adults and is strongly linked to sleep disorders and lifestyle. While genetic factors play a role, non-genetic influences account for two-thirds of the variability in sleep sufficiency.

Area of Science:

  • Sleep Medicine
  • Public Health
  • Behavioral Genetics

Background:

  • Insufficient sleep (sleep deprivation) presents significant health, social, and economic challenges.
  • Understanding its prevalence, associated factors, and genetic underpinnings is crucial for public health interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the prevalence and associations of insufficient sleep.
  • To investigate the role of genetic and non-genetic influences on sleep sufficiency.

Main Methods:

  • A longitudinal panel study using questionnaires administered in 1981 and 1990.
  • Included 12,423 Finnish twins (aged 33-60) representative of the general population.
  • Structural equation modeling analyzed genetic influences on sleep duration versus perceived sleep need.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • In 1990, 20.4% reported insufficient sleep (16.2% men, 23.9% women), with 44% experiencing persistent issues over 9 years.
  • Strongest associations included daytime sleepiness, insomnia, disturbed sleep, and evening chronotype.
  • Non-genetic factors explained two-thirds of the variability in liability to insufficient sleep.

Conclusions:

  • Insufficient sleep is a prevalent, persistent issue strongly associated with sleep-wake characteristics.
  • Genetic influences account for approximately one-third of the liability to insufficient sleep.
  • Assessing sleep sufficiency in health examinations for working adults is recommended.
