Dose-Response Relationship: Potency and Efficacy01:22

Dose-Response Relationship: Potency and Efficacy

The potency of a drug is the measure of its ability to produce a biological response and can be compared by looking at the half-maximum effective concentration or EC50 values of different drugs. A lower EC50 value indicates higher potency of the drug. In the dose–response curve of two antihypertensive drugs, candesartan and irbesartan, a significant difference is observed in their EC50 values. A lower EC50 value for candesartan indicates that it is more potent than irbesartan, as it produces...

Pharmacodynamic Models: Emax Drug–Concentration Effect Model

The Emax drug-concentration effect model is central to pharmacodynamics in drug discovery and development. This model is predicated on the receptor occupancy theory, which posits that the effect of a drug is directly related to the number of receptors occupied by the drug and the resultant complex formation. The model describes the reversible interaction between a drug (C) and a receptor (R) to form a drug-receptor complex (RC). The kinetics of this interaction are quantified by an equation that...
Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Area of Science:

  • Occupational Health
  • Workplace Psychology
  • Program Evaluation

Background:

  • Traditional employee assistance programs (EAPs) often have outreach materials primarily targeting white men.
  • There is a need to enhance EAP accessibility and utilization among diverse employee populations, including women and minorities.
  • Workplace alcohol-related and other problems require accessible and inclusive support services.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of an enhanced employee assistance program (EAP) intervention in increasing EAP utilization.
  • To determine if enhanced EAP outreach services, inclusive of women and minorities, improve overall EAP engagement.
  • To assess the impact of tailored EAP materials on diverse employee groups.

Main Methods:

  • Development of an enhanced EAP intervention with comprehensive outreach services.
  • Implementation across two primary and 16 newly contracted worksites (intervention sites).
  • Utilized time series data from 1991-1998, comparing intervention sites with 107 comparison worksites.

Main Results:

  • The enhanced EAP intervention led to a 58% increase in cases among women and minorities.
  • Utilization by white male cases increased by 45%.
  • Overall EAP utilization saw a 53% increase across all employees.

Conclusions:

  • The enhanced EAP intervention is a cost-effective method to boost EAP utilization among all employees.
  • Inclusive outreach and materials successfully increased EAP engagement for women and minority employees.
  • EAP services can be adapted to appeal to diverse demographics without negatively impacting utilization by majority groups.
