Summary

Thyroid function is assessed using thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (fT4) levels. If abnormal thyroid function is suspected, TSH and fT4 measurements guide diagnosis and further testing for hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Clinical Biochemistry

Context:

  • Thyroid hormone levels are crucial indicators of metabolic status.
  • Accurate assessment of thyroid function is essential for diagnosing and managing thyroid disorders.

Purpose:

  • To outline the diagnostic approach for evaluating thyroid function.
  • To specify the roles of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (fT4) in assessing thyroid health.
  • To discuss the indications for additional thyroid investigations.

Summary:

  • Thyroid function is primarily evaluated by measuring serum TSH and fT4.
  • A normal TSH level is often sufficient to confirm normal thyroid function.
  • In cases of suspected hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, combined TSH and fT4 assessment is recommended.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Further investigations depend on the suspected diagnosis, with acquired primary hypothyroidism in adults often diagnosed solely by TSH and fT4.
  • Guidelines for radionuclide scans, ultrasonography, and antibody testing in primary hyperthyroidism are presented.
  • Impact:

    • Provides a clear framework for clinicians to accurately assess thyroid function.
    • Aids in the timely and appropriate diagnosis of thyroid disorders.
    • Helps to avoid unnecessary investigations, optimizing patient care and resource utilization.
