    Background:

    • Diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased risk of infections.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the neutrophil bactericidal capacity in patients with diabetes mellitus.
    • To investigate the relationship between neutrophil dysfunction and infection in diabetic patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Assessed killed intracellular bacteria (KICB) percentage in 31 diabetic patients and 25 controls.
    • Utilized the lysostaphin assay to identify specific neutrophil defects (phagocytosis, intracellular killing).

    • Diabetic patients showed significantly lower KICB (72.8%) compared to controls (95.4%, p≤0.01).
