Summary

Visual evoked potentials (VEP) reveal abnormal nerve fiber crossing in albinism. This VEP lateralization is a sensitive indicator for detecting ocular albinism.

Context:

  • Albinism involves abnormal optic nerve innervation, leading to contralateral hemisphere dominance.
  • Visual evoked potentials (VEP) can detect this unilateral visual cortex activation (lateralization).

Purpose:

  • To investigate the detectability of VEP lateralization in patients with albinism using pattern onset stimulation.
  • To assess if VEP lateralization is a sensitive diagnostic marker for albinism.

Summary:

  • Multichannel pattern onset VEPs were recorded from 22 patients with albinism and 15 controls.
  • VEP lateralization was consistently detected in albinism patients, but not in normal volunteers.
  • Simulated nystagmus in controls did not induce VEP lateralization.

Impact:

  • VEP lateralization is a reliable indicator of abnormal optic nerve crossing in oculocutaneous and ocular albinism.
  • This method offers higher sensitivity for diagnosing ocular albinism compared to other clinical signs.
