Self-Evaluation: Self-Enhancement and Self-Verification

Social psychologists have documented that feeling good about ourselves and maintaining positive self-esteem is a powerful motivator of human behavior (Tavris & Aronson, 2008). In the United States, members of the predominant culture typically think very highly of themselves and view themselves as good people who are above average on many desirable traits (Ehrlinger, Gilovich, & Ross, 2005). Often, our behavior, attitudes, and beliefs are affected when we experience a threat to our...
Self-Presentation01:25

Self-Presentation

Self-presentation is a fundamental aspect of social interaction, shaping both how others perceive individuals and how they view themselves. This dynamic process influences behaviors in various social settings, often leading people to adjust their appearance, speech, and demeanor to align with their desired identity. While self-presentation can be deliberate or unconscious, it plays a critical role in interpersonal relationships and self-perception.Forms of Self-PresentationSelf-presentation can...

Strategies of Self-Presentation III: Self-Monitoring

Self-monitoring is a central construct in understanding individual differences in self-presentation strategies across social contexts. It refers to how individuals observe, regulate, and control their expressive behavior and self-presentation following situational cues. Self-monitoring reflects a person's sensitivity to social appropriateness and willingness to adapt behavior to fit varying interpersonal demands.High vs. Low Self-Monitoring IndividualsIndividuals high in self-monitoring are...
Introspection01:29

Introspection

Introspection, long upheld as a reliable route to self-knowledge, involves examining one's thoughts, emotions, and mental processes. It underpins many psychological practices, from mindfulness meditation to psychotherapy and self-help strategies. However, empirical evidence challenges the accuracy of introspection as a means of understanding oneself.Limitations of Introspective InsightSeminal work by Nisbett and Wilson demonstrated that individuals are frequently unaware of the true causes...
Self-Awareness and Its Effects01:21

Self-Awareness and Its Effects

Self-awareness is a psychological state in which the individual becomes the focal point of their attention. This inward focus transforms the self into an object of contemplation and assessment, influencing how individuals perceive their actions and their alignment with personal and societal standards.Triggers and Contexts for Self-AwarenessSelf-awareness can be activated by external stimuli that make individuals visually or audibly aware of themselves, such as mirrors, cameras, or recordings.
Understanding Deception01:14

Understanding Deception

Deception is a pervasive aspect of human communication. Empirical studies have shown that most individuals engage in some form of deceit on a daily basis, with approximately 20% of social exchanges involving deceptive elements. Lying follows a developmental trajectory, peaking during adolescence and declining with age, possibly due to the maturation of cognitive control and social accountability.Cognitive and Social Factors in Deception DetectionDespite its prevalence, accurately detecting...

Summary

People overestimate their deceptive behaviors but underestimate their deceptive speech content when lying. This study explored self-awareness in deception among nursing students, finding a significant gap between perceived and actual lying cues.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Forensic Psychology
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Understanding self-awareness in deception is crucial for accurate lie detection.
  • Previous research has not fully explored the discrepancy between perceived and actual deceptive behaviors and speech content.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate participants' insight into their own behavior and speech content while lying.
  • To test whether individuals overestimate their stereotypical lying behaviors and underestimate their stereotypical speech content.

Main Methods:

  • 86 nursing students participated in two interviews (truthful and deceptive) about a film.
  • Interviews were videotaped, transcribed, and coded by independent coders for actual behavior and speech.
  • Participants completed questionnaires detailing their perceived behavior and speech during both interviews.

Main Results:

  • Results supported Hypothesis 1: participants believed they exhibited more stereotypical lying behaviors than they actually did.
  • Results supported Hypothesis 2: participants believed their deceptive speech contained fewer stereotypical features than was actually observed.

Conclusions:

  • Individuals possess flawed insight into their own deceptive actions and communication.
  • The findings have significant implications for the accuracy and methods used in deception detection.
