Area of Science:

  • Neonatal Dermatology
  • Pediatric Dermatology
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Eosinophilic pustular folliculitis (EPF) of infancy is a rare neonatal dermatosis.
  • It can cause significant parental distress due to its pustular appearance.
  • Differential diagnosis includes infections and other neonatal pustular conditions.

Observation:

  • A case of a Caucasian infant with unusually early onset EPF on the first day of life is presented.
  • The condition presented as a pustular eruption.
  • Diagnostic workup included skin smears and biopsy.

Findings:

  • EPF of infancy is a self-limiting condition.
  • Early onset EPF can mimic infectious pustular eruptions in neonates.
  • Histopathological examination may be required for definitive diagnosis.

Implications:

  • Recognizing EPF of infancy is crucial to prevent misdiagnosis and unnecessary antimicrobial therapy.
  • Prompt diagnosis avoids parental anxiety associated with neonatal pustular conditions.
  • Understanding the benign, self-limiting nature of EPF guides appropriate clinical management.
