Background:

  • Conflicting evidence exists regarding the association between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and cerebral embolism.
  • Few studies have investigated this relationship, particularly in postmenopausal women and those with a history of breast cancer.

Observation:

  • Three patient cases illustrate the occurrence of cerebral embolism during HRT.
  • Case 1: A 73-year-old woman experienced cerebral embolism with left hemiparesis after 6 years of estrogen plus medroxyprogesterone acetate HRT for menopausal symptoms.
  • Case 2: A 47-year-old woman developed left hemiparesis due to carotid bifurcation embolism while on medroxyprogesterone acetate for breast cancer recurrence.
  • Case 3: A 72-year-old woman experienced cerebral embolism shortly after initiating tamoxifen citrate for breast cancer relapse prevention.
