    Background:

    • Gilbert's syndrome is a common genetic disorder characterized by unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia.
    • Understanding population incidence and sex-specific differences in bilirubin levels is crucial for diagnosing Gilbert's syndrome.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the normal range of total serum bilirubin concentrations in adult males and females.
    • To investigate the distribution of bilirubin levels and identify potential thresholds for unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia.
    • To estimate the population incidence and sex distribution of Gilbert's syndrome based on bilirubin levels.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum samples were collected from 197 healthy males and 102 healthy females.
    • Total serum bilirubin concentration was quantified using an Autoanalyzer technique.
    • Bilirubin concentration distributions were analyzed for males and females separately.

    • Mean total serum bilirubin concentration was significantly lower in females compared to males.

    • Elevated bilirubin levels above the identified antimodes in males and females suggest probable Gilbert's syndrome.
    • The population incidence of Gilbert's syndrome may be as high as 6%.
    • The sex incidence of Gilbert's syndrome appears to be approximately equal between males and females.
