Summary

Five years after the SCUD missile attack, children

Background:

Examining long-term effects of SCUD missile attacks on children.
Assessing the influence of maternal psychological functioning and family cohesion.

Observation:

Studied 81 children (8-10 years) and their mothers 5 years post-Gulf War.
Assessed internalizing, externalizing, stress, and posttraumatic symptoms in children.
Evaluated maternal general and posttraumatic symptoms, defensive style, and object relations.

Findings:

Children showed decreased symptom severity but increased avoidant symptoms.
Higher symptom severity linked to displacement, low family cohesion, and maternal psychological distress.
Maternal-child symptom association was stronger in younger children.
