Barriers to bicycle helmet use.

Background:

Bicycle-related head injuries pose a significant public health risk.
Helmet use is a proven preventive measure, yet prevalence remains suboptimal.
Understanding barriers to helmet use is crucial for effective intervention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the factors influencing bicycle helmet usage among various age groups.
To identify reasons for non-compliance with helmet-wearing recommendations.
To inform targeted interventions for increasing helmet adoption.

Main Methods:

A survey was administered to 2424 participants across public schools and bicycle trails in Minnesota.
Participants were categorized into three age groups: child (7-10), adolescent (11-19), and adult (>19).
Data collected included helmet usage rates, reasons for non-use, and perceptions of risk and protection.

Main Results:

Helmet use varied by age, with lowest rates in adolescents (11-19 years) and 30-39 year olds (30-31%).
Common reasons for not wearing helmets included discomfort, annoyance, heat, and perceived lack of necessity.
Peer and parental helmet use significantly influenced individual choices, alongside perceived risk and protection levels.

Conclusions:

Despite awareness of protection, bicycle helmet use remains low, particularly in at-risk age groups.

Targeted educational campaigns focusing on injury severity and helmet benefits are recommended to increase bicycle safety.
