Routine refraction after Nd:YAG capsulotomy is not necessary for patients with uncomplicated phacoemulsification and AMO@Phacoflex II intraocular lenses. This study found no significant refractive changes post-procedure.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Refractive Surgery
  • Cataract Surgery

Background:

  • Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a common complication after cataract surgery.
  • Nd:YAG capsulotomy is a standard procedure to address PCO.
  • Refractive changes after Nd:YAG capsulotomy require investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of Nd:YAG capsulotomy on refractive outcomes.
  • To determine the necessity of post-procedure refraction after Nd:YAG capsulotomy.

Main Methods:

  • The study included 42 eyes that underwent uncomplicated phacoemulsification with AMO@Phacoflex II intraocular lenses.
  • Autorefraction and subjective refraction were performed before and after Nd:YAG capsulotomy.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • The mean spherical equivalent before Nd:YAG capsulotomy was -0.61 +/- 0.90 diopters.
  • The mean spherical equivalent after Nd:YAG capsulotomy was -0.57 +/- 0.84 diopters.
  • Statistical analysis (paired Student's t-test) revealed no significant difference in refraction.

Conclusions:

  • Routine refraction is not indicated following Nd:YAG capsulotomy in this patient cohort.
  • Phacoemulsification with AMO@Phacoflex II IOLs followed by Nd:YAG capsulotomy does not necessitate routine refractive assessment.
