Summary

Assault burn injuries, particularly those from fire, lead to severe outcomes including larger burn size, more inhalation injuries, and longer hospital stays compared to general burn patients. Fire assaults show a higher incidence of critical complications and mortality.

Area of Science:

  • Trauma surgery
  • Burn care
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Assault by burning is a severe trauma with worse outcomes than general burns.
  • Victims often experience inhalation injury, prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital stays, and increased mortality.
  • Tertiary burn centers manage these complex cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the epidemiology and outcomes of assault burn victims.
  • To compare assault burn patients to the general burn population.
  • To analyze outcomes based on the type of assault (scald, chemical, fire).

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 1063 acute burn patients admitted between March 1993 and February 1999.
  • Identification of 28 assault burn victims (2.6% of total).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Analysis of burn size, inhalation injury, operations, ICU admission, hospital stay, and mortality.
  • Main Results:

    • Assault burn victims had significantly larger burn size (21.9% TBSA), higher inhalation injury rates, longer ICU/hospital stays, and higher mortality (10.7%) than general burn patients.
    • Fire assaults resulted in larger burns, more inhalation injuries, and longer ICU stays.
    • All ICU admissions (9) and deaths (3) were from fire-related assaults.

    Conclusions:

    • Assault burn injuries represent a distinct and severe patient group with significantly worse outcomes.
    • Fire is the most dangerous form of assault burn, correlating with critical injuries and fatalities.
    • Targeted interventions and specialized care are crucial for improving outcomes in assault burn victims.
