Summary

Dental implants can be successfully placed in bone regenerated using guided bone regeneration (GBR) techniques. This study in primates shows regenerated bone supports implants as effectively as native bone, with similar bone-to-implant contact after loading.

Background:

  • Guided bone regeneration (GBR) was previously used to repair large mandibular bone defects in primates.
  • This study investigates implant placement and loading in GBR-treated bone.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the long-term success of root-form implants placed in GBR-created regenerated bone.
  • To compare implant performance in regenerated bone versus native bone.

Main Methods:

  • Standardized mandibular defects (8 x 19 mm) were created in 9 primates.
  • Reinforced ePTFE membranes were used for GBR, with implants placed 12 months post-regeneration.
  • Implants were loaded with prostheses for 12 months and compared to implants in non-regenerated bone.
