Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Sleep Medicine
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder affecting sleep quality.
  • Prevalence and impact of RLS on neuropsychiatric health in women are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of RLS in a sample of working-aged women.
  • To investigate the association between RLS and neuropsychiatric complaints.

Main Methods:

  • A random sample of 200 women (aged 18-64) in mid-Sweden completed a questionnaire.
  • International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group criteria were used for diagnosis.
  • Multivariate logistic regression analyzed associations between RLS and other variables.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • 11.4% of women reported RLS symptoms.
  • RLS sufferers experienced more sleep-related complaints, daytime headaches (5x more frequent), and work performance issues due to sleepiness (9x more frequent).
  • A tendency towards social isolation was observed in RLS patients.

Conclusions:

  • RLS is common in working-aged women.
  • RLS is associated with increased neuropsychiatric symptoms and sleep disturbances.
  • Findings highlight the need for awareness and management of RLS in this demographic.
