Smoking is linked to an increased risk of follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), particularly in women. This study investigated the association between smoking and various hematolymphopoietic malignancies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between tobacco smoking and hematolymphopoietic malignancies.
  • To evaluate the risk of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), Hodgkin's disease (HD), multiple myeloma (MM), and leukemia (LEU) in relation to smoking.
  • To identify specific subtypes of NHL that may be associated with smoking.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based case-control study was conducted in 12 Italian areas.
  • Detailed interviews on smoking habits were administered to 1450 NHL, 365 HD, 270 MM, 649 LEU patients, and 1779 controls.

    • A slightly increased risk for NHL was observed in smokers (OR=1.2).
    • A consistent positive association was found for follicular NHL, with a significant excess risk for ever smokers (OR=1.8).
    • The risk for follicular NHL was significantly elevated in women smokers (OR=2.3) and showed a positive exposure-response gradient for smoking duration, especially in women.

    Conclusions:

    • Cigarette smoking may be a risk factor for follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in women.
    • No clear association was observed between smoking and Hodgkin's disease (HD), multiple myeloma (MM), or leukemia (LEU).
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the specific mechanisms linking smoking to follicular NHL.
