Summary

Penile fracture surgery offers excellent outcomes, with most patients regaining adequate erectile function. Conservative management also showed no serious sequelae for presumed penile fractures.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present the experience of a single surgeon with penile fractures.
  • To describe evolving diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for penile fractures.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 34 penile fracture cases over 11 years.
  • Surgical repair in 29 cases using a degloving incision.
  • Conservative management for 5 patients refusing surgery.

Main Results:

  • 34 patients (18-38 years) evaluated for blunt trauma to the erect penis.
  • 29 cases involved corporeal rupture, 5 had urethral injury.
  • 33/34 patients reported adequate erections post-treatment; 2 had mild curvature.

Conclusions:

  • Degloving procedure with urethral catheter offers best surgical exposure.
  • Saline injection aids in assessing corporeal and urethral integrity.
  • Surgical repair had no serious sequelae; conservative management also showed good outcomes.
