Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Chronic sinusitis is often associated with anaerobic bacterial infections.
  • Literature extensively documents various anaerobic pathogens in chronic sinusitis.

Observation:

  • A unique case of paranasal sinusitis caused by Clostridium perfringens is reported.
  • The patient experienced severe headaches and unilateral sphenoid sinus opacification.

Findings:

  • Imaging revealed bone demineralization and intrasinus calcification.
  • Clostridium perfringens was identified as the causative pathogen.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known spectrum of pathogens implicated in paranasal sinusitis.
