Area of Science:

  • Addiction research
  • Behavioral science
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Nicotine replacement therapies and bupropion are common smoking cessation aids.
  • Most smoking cessation attempts fail, and many smokers avoid medication.
  • Oral dextrose (glucose) is an inexpensive potential aid for smoking cessation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the hypothesis that oral dextrose can reduce cigarette cravings.
  • To explore glucose as a potential aid for smoking cessation, particularly for those preferring non-medication options.

Main Methods:

  • Review of placebo-controlled studies on glucose tablets and smoking cessation.
  • Analysis of a key adequately powered study examining glucose's effect on abstinence rates.

Main Results:

  • Previous studies suggest glucose tablets may reduce the desire to smoke during abstinence.
  • One study indicated glucose tablets significantly increased 1-month abstinence rates compared to placebo.

Conclusions:

  • Glucose tablets show promise as a low-cost aid for smoking cessation.
  • Further definitive trials are needed to confirm the efficacy of glucose for smoking cessation.
