Area of Science:

  • Environmental microbiology
  • Virology

Background:

  • Astroviruses are a significant cause of gastroenteritis in humans.
  • Wastewater surveillance is a valuable tool for monitoring pathogen circulation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate methods for astrovirus detection in wastewater.
  • To investigate the occurrence and genetic diversity of astroviruses in wastewater from Southern France and Barcelona.

Main Methods:

  • Development and application of astrovirus detection procedures for wastewater samples.
  • Genotyping of positive samples using Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) on an ORF1a gene fragment with DdeI endonuclease.

Main Results:

  • Astroviruses were detected in wastewater samples from the studied treatment plants.
