Summary

Copper toxicosis in camelids often presents atypically, complicating diagnosis.

Observation:

An alpaca presented with signs consistent with severe illness and was found in lateral recumbency.
The animal subsequently died, necessitating a necropsy examination.
Gross and microscopic examination of the liver revealed significant pathological changes.

Findings:

Necropsy revealed severe, widespread periacinar hepatocellular necrosis in the alpaca's liver.
Rhodamine staining confirmed the presence of copper within the necrotic liver cells.
