Summary

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is linked to serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine: 5-HT) issues. Reduced neuroendocrine responses to m-CPP in bulimic women with self-destructive tendencies suggest a specific 5-HT abnormality.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • Assessed 40 women with BN and 21 controls using structured interviews and questionnaires for self-harm history and mood/impulse issues.
  • Administered meta-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP), a 5-HT agonist, to measure prolactin (PRL) and cortisol (CORT) neuroendocrine responses.
