This study reveals a novel link between antiphospholipid syndrome and severe food-induced anaphylaxis. Four patients with antiphospholipid syndrome experienced anaphylaxis from specific food allergens, particularly a 45-kD almond protein.

Background:

  • The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disorder associated with thrombosis and pregnancy complications.
  • Food-induced anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction to ingested foods.
  • No prior reports have linked food-induced anaphylaxis with APS.

Observation:

  • Four patients with APS experienced severe anaphylaxis after consuming specific vegetal foods.
  • These patients exhibited high levels of specific IgE antibodies to certain food allergens.
  • One patient developed a novel allergy to blackberry.

Findings:

  • All APS patients demonstrated specific IgE antibodies against food allergens.
  • Immunoblot analysis identified IgE specific to a 45-kD protein in almond extract in all four patients.
