Summary

Continuous venovenous hemofiltration and hemodiafiltration using a standard infusion pump proved safe and effective in a pediatric animal model. This method offers a viable alternative for neonatal and infant extrarenal replacement therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility and safety of continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH) and continuous venovenous hemodiafiltration (CVVHDF) using a conventional infusion pump in a pediatric animal model.
  • To compare the efficacy of CVVH and CVVHDF with this adapted technique.

Main Methods:

  • Fourteen pediatric pigs (8-13 kg) underwent CVVH and CVVHDF for 1 hour each.
  • A standard infusion pump (IVAC 571) and a pediatric hemofilter (0.22 m2) were utilized.

    • This adapted technique demonstrates potential for use in neonates and infants, offering a more accessible treatment option.
