Summary

Acute infectious digital flexor tenosynovitis in eight patients was treated. Surgical intervention or conservative management, including rest and anti-inflammatory drugs, effectively resolved symptoms, suggesting overuse as a cause.

Background:

Acute infectious digital flexor tenosynovitis is a condition affecting the hand.
The etiology of this condition is often linked to bacterial infection or crystal deposition.

Observation:

Eight patients (53-86 years) presented with symptoms of acute infectious digital flexor tenosynovitis following hand overuse.
No bacterial or crystal etiology was identified in any patient.
Two patients initially received antibiotics due to leukocytosis and elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) without improvement.

Findings:

Surgical treatment resolved symptoms in two patients who initially received antibiotics.
Conservative management, including hand elevation, rest, and anti-inflammatory agents, led to complete symptom resolution in the remaining six patients.

The study suggests a potential link between overuse and age-related degeneration of the flexor tendon system in causing nonspecific tenosynovitis.

Implications:

Nonspecific tenosynovitis may result from overuse in conjunction with age-related tendon degeneration.
Conservative treatment and surgical intervention are effective management strategies.
Further research into the biomechanics of hand overuse and tendon aging is warranted.
