The Administration and Simplification Provisions and the Standards for Privacy of Individually Identifiable Health Information Section of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) will have a significant impact on the daily operations of most physicians' practices. The HIPAA legislation is summarized, and these two sections of HIPAA are discussed in detail. The rationale for the regulations, their substance and intent, and physician compliance strategies are discussed.
