Long-term peritoneal dialysis (PD) can cause sclerosing peritonitis, a serious complication. Early detection and understanding of peritoneal membrane changes are crucial for patient management and developing preventive strategies.

Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a common treatment for end-stage renal disease.
  • Long-term PD can lead to morphological and functional changes in the peritoneal membrane.

Observation:

  • A patient on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) for 7 months pre- and 86 months post-transplant experienced two peritonitis episodes.
  • Post-hemodialysis, the patient developed ascites, GI disturbances, and an inflammatory syndrome, diagnosed as sclerosing peritonitis.

Findings:

  • Sclerosing peritonitis was diagnosed after excluding other causes.
  • The patient was treated with corticosteroid therapy.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the peritoneal changes associated with long-term PD.
