Summary

Technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate (Tc-99m-MDP) imaging shows increased bone growth around titanium implants when combined with fibroblast growth factor (FGF-1). This radiopharmaceutical method can assess bone healing in vivo.

Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Radiopharmacology
  • Skeletal Biology

Background:

  • Radiopharmaceutical isotopes like Technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate (Tc-99m-MDP) are clinically used for detecting osteogenic tumors.
  • Increased gamma activity of Tc-99m-MDP indicates heightened bone activity, offering potential for in vivo bone growth assessment around implants.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify Tc-99m-MDP activity around titanium alloy implants in rat tibiae.
  • To evaluate the effect of acidic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-1) on bone growth around implants.

Main Methods:

  • Titanium alloy implants were placed in rat tibiae, with FGF-1 treatment in one group and controls in another.
  • Rats were injected with Tc-99m-MDP, imaged using a gamma camera, and implant-associated activity was quantified.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Statistical comparison of Tc-99m-MDP intensity between groups was performed using ANOVA.
  • Main Results:

    • Implants treated with FGF-1 showed significantly higher Tc-99m-MDP activity compared to control implants.
    • This indicates enhanced bone growth or activity around implants treated with the growth factor.

    Conclusions:

    • Tc-99m-MDP imaging is a viable method for assessing bone growth around implants in laboratory animals.
    • FGF-1 significantly enhances bone activity around titanium implants in vivo.
