Diagnosing small-bowel obstructions from persimmon bezoars is challenging. Computed tomography (CT) imaging reveals characteristic findings, aiding in preoperative diagnosis of these rare gastrointestinal bezoars.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Radiology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Small-bowel obstruction is a common surgical emergency.
  • Bezoars, particularly those formed from persimmons (diospyrobezoars), are an uncommon cause of obstruction.
  • Preoperative diagnosis of persimmon bezoars can be difficult.

Observation:

  • This study reviewed three cases of small-bowel obstruction caused by persimmon bezoars.
  • Abdominal computed tomography (CT) was performed preoperatively for all patients.
  • CT imaging demonstrated a well-defined, intraluminal mass with heterogeneous density and gas bubbles.

Findings:

  • Computed tomography is effective in identifying the characteristic features of persimmon bezoars.
  • The presence of a mottled mass with gas bubbles on CT is indicative of a persimmon bezoar.

Related Experiment Videos

  • CT findings facilitate differentiation from other causes of small-bowel obstruction.
  • Implications:

    • Accurate preoperative diagnosis using CT can optimize surgical planning and patient management.
    • Radiologists and surgeons should be aware of CT findings suggestive of persimmon bezoars.
    • Early and accurate diagnosis can reduce complications associated with delayed treatment of small-bowel obstruction.
