Summary

Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and sE-selectin are elevated in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, C-reactive protein (CRP) and microalbuminuria are more accurate markers of disease activity.

Background:

  • Soluble adhesion molecules are commonly elevated in various inflammatory conditions.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses chronic inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the association between soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and sE-selectin levels and the activity of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Main Methods:

  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to quantify sICAM-1 and sE-selectin levels.
  • The study included 53 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 38 patients with Crohn's disease (CD).

Main Results:

  • Elevated sICAM-1 levels were observed in patients with active UC and CD compared to inactive disease and controls.

    • C-reactive protein (CRP) and microalbuminuria are more precise indicators of clinical disease activity in IBD.
    • The routine use of soluble adhesion molecules as disease activity markers in IBD is not supported by this study.
