Summary

Higher community periodontal index of treatment need (CPITN) scores indicate poorer oral hygiene. This study found a significant association between higher CPITN scores and lower odds of acceptable oral hygiene in adults.

Area of Science:

  • Oral Health Research
  • Dental Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Oral health status is a critical component of overall well-being.
  • Assessing oral hygiene practices and outcomes is essential for public health initiatives.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between oral hygiene status and periodontal treatment needs.
  • To identify key factors influencing acceptable oral hygiene in a representative population sample.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional oral health survey was conducted with dental examinations and interviews.
  • Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed on a sample of 714 residents aged over 14.
  • Oral hygiene was assessed using the debris index (DI), categorized into acceptable (DI ≤ 1.20) and unacceptable (DI > 1.20) groups.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Higher community periodontal index of treatment need (CPITN) scores were significantly associated with a lower probability of acceptable oral hygiene.
  • Odds ratios indicated substantially reduced odds of acceptable oral hygiene with increasing CPITN scores (e.g., OR=0.02 for CPITN score 4).
  • Self-perceived tooth condition, gender, and the number of missing teeth were also significant predictors of oral hygiene status.

Conclusions:

  • Periodontal health status, as indicated by CPITN, is a strong determinant of overall oral hygiene.
  • Public health interventions should address periodontal treatment needs to improve population oral hygiene.
  • Individual factors like self-evaluation and dentition status also play a role in maintaining oral hygiene.
