This study describes a rare case of plexiform schwannoma in the cervical esophagus, presenting as a large intraluminal polyp. This visceral tumor location is unprecedented, mimicking other esophageal conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Plexiform schwannomas are uncommon tumors typically found in the skin and subcutaneous tissues.
  • Visceral involvement of plexiform schwannomas is exceedingly rare.
  • Esophageal location of plexiform schwannoma has not been previously reported.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a unique case of plexiform schwannoma in the cervical esophagus.
  • To describe the clinical presentation and histopathological findings of this rare tumor.
  • To discuss the potential etiological factors and differential diagnosis.

Main Methods:

  • Case report of a patient with an esophageal polyp.
  • Histopathological examination of the resected intraluminal polyp and submucosal nodules.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Clinical evaluation for signs of neurofibromatosis or schwannomatosis.
  • Main Results:

    • A large, pedunculated intraluminal polyp originating from the postcricoid region was identified.
    • Histopathology confirmed the polyp and associated submucosal nodules were composed of cellular schwannomatous tissue.
    • The patient had no evidence of neurofibromatosis or schwannomatosis.

    Conclusions:

    • Plexiform schwannoma can occur in the esophagus, a site previously undescribed.
    • The intraluminal presentation may be related to mechanical factors specific to the esophageal location.
    • This case expands the known spectrum of schwannoma localization and presentation.
