The gingivitis fluorescein test in recruits.

W Mörmann, B Regolati, F Lutz

    Helvetica Odontologica Acta
    |April 1, 1975
    PubMed
    Summary

Improved oral hygiene effectively reduced gingivitis, as measured by the Sulcus Bleeding Index (SBI). However, the Gingivitis Fluorescein Test (GFT) did not show a corresponding decrease in fluorescein levels, indicating a disconnect between clinical signs and fluorescein clearance.

    Area of Science:

    • Dentistry
    • Periodontology
    • Biomarkers

    Background:

    • Gingival inflammation is a common oral health issue.
    • Assessing gingivitis severity and extent is crucial for effective treatment.
    • The Gingivitis Fluorescein Test (GFT) and Sulcus Bleeding Index (SBI) are used to evaluate gingival health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the average individual status of gingival inflammation.
    • To assess the effectiveness of prophylaxis and hygiene instructions on gingivitis.
    • To investigate the correlation between fluorescein levels and gingival inflammation.

    Main Methods:

    • Two groups of subjects (39 and 47) were studied.
    • Gingivitis Fluorescein Test (GFT) and Sulcus Bleeding Index (SBI) were employed.
    • The test group received prophylaxis and hygiene instructions; the control group did not.

    Main Results:

    • Prophylaxis and hygiene instructions reduced gingivitis in the test group after 12 days.
    • No simultaneous decrease in fluorescein was observed in the test group.
    • The average SBI-score did not exceed 1.2 in either group.
    • Fluorescein content in mouthwashings was significantly reduced compared to previous studies.
    • No correlation was found between fluorescein levels and clinical gingival inflammation.

    Conclusions:

    • Oral hygiene interventions effectively reduce clinical signs of gingivitis.
    • The Gingivitis Fluorescein Test (GFT) may not accurately reflect short-term improvements in gingival inflammation after hygiene interventions.
    • Further research is needed to understand the relationship between fluorescein clearance and periodontal health.
