High maternal intake of vitamin A supplements during pregnancy was linked to a significantly increased risk of transposition of the great arteries in infants. Dietary vitamin A and carotenoids did not show this association.

- Intakes of carotenoids and dietary retinol were not associated with an increased risk for either type of outflow tract defect.

- High maternal intake of supplemental retinol during the periconceptional period may increase the risk of transposition of the great arteries.
- Dietary sources of vitamin A (retinol and carotenoids) do not appear to carry the same risk.
- This suggests a potential threshold effect or differential biological activity of supplemental versus dietary vitamin A in relation to specific congenital heart defects.
