Summary

Adults with a prior ADHD diagnosis reported more inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity symptoms than controls. These findings support using DSM-IV criteria for adult ADHD assessment.

Background:

  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that can persist into adulthood.
  • Accurate diagnosis in adults is crucial for effective management and treatment.
  • Self-report measures are commonly used in ADHD assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare self-ratings of DSM-IV ADHD symptoms in adults with a previous ADHD diagnosis versus age- and sex-matched controls.
  • To evaluate the diagnostic utility of DSM-IV ADHD criteria in adult populations.

Main Methods:

  • Adults with a prior ADHD diagnosis and a control group completed self-rating scales for DSM-IV ADHD symptoms.

    • These findings support the validity of self-report symptom ratings in adult ADHD diagnosis.
