Thyroid-stimulating hormone levels in idiopathic euthyroid goiter.

R L Young, W C Harvey, E L Mazzaferri

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism
    |July 1, 1975
    PubMed
    Summary

Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels are significantly higher in patients with idiopathic goiter compared to normal individuals. This elevation suggests TSH plays a role in goiter development, even in long-standing cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Thyroidology

    Background:

    • Idiopathic goiter is a common thyroid condition.
    • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is a key regulator of thyroid function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare serum TSH levels in individuals with and without idiopathic goiter.
    • To investigate the role of TSH in the pathogenesis of idiopathic goiter.

    Main Methods:

    • Radioimmunoassay (RIA) was used to measure serum TSH levels.
    • 167 normal individuals and 51 patients with idiopathic euthyroid goiter were studied.
    • Thyroid function tests (total thyroxine, free thyroid index) were assessed.

    Main Results:

    • 42% of goiter patients exhibited elevated TSH levels.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • TSH distribution was significantly higher in the goiter group (P < 0.001).
  • Elevated TSH was observed in both early (<1 yr) and long-standing (>1 yr) goiter.
  • Conclusions:

    • Elevated TSH supports its role in the genesis of idiopathic goiter.
    • TSH elevation may be an early indicator but is also present in chronic goiter.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the precise mechanisms involved.
