Summary

Cancer is a known risk factor for venous thromboembolism (VTE). Patients with idiopathic VTE have a higher prevalence of concomitant or occult cancer, suggesting screening benefits.

Background:

  • The association between malignancy and venous thromboembolism (VTE) was first noted by Trousseau.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the relationship between VTE and malignancy.
  • To analyze the prevalence of concomitant and occult cancer in patients with VTE.
  • To assess the potential for detecting cancer in idiopathic VTE patients through screening.

  • Literature review and analysis of existing studies on VTE and cancer.
  • Comparison of cancer prevalence in secondary vs. idiopathic VTE.
