CLT and CLS job responsibilities: current distinctions and updates

This study examined the differences between clinical laboratory scientists (CLSs) and clinical laboratory technicians (CLTs) to clarify their job responsibilities. Researchers conducted surveys to identify tasks significant to effective practice at job entry. The study found that CLSs perform a broader array of technical and communication tasks, while CLTs handle tasks requiring problem-solving and high-level reasoning. The job tasks overlapped by 76%, but each role had unique responsibilities. The findings suggest that CLS curricula should include management tasks, while CLT training must emphasize problem-solving and reasoning skills. The study supports the need for updated certification standards to align with current job practices.
