Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Primary hyperparathyroidism is most commonly caused by parathyroid adenomas, typically with mixed cell populations.
  • Parathyroid adenomas composed solely of water-clear cells are exceptionally rare, with only two prior English literature reports.

Observation:

  • This study reports a case of an intrathyroidal parathyroid adenoma.
  • The adenoma was exclusively composed of water-clear cells.

Findings:

  • This represents the first documented case of an intrathyroidal parathyroid adenoma comprised exclusively of water-clear cells.
  • This finding expands the known presentations of parathyroid adenomas.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering rare cell types and anatomical locations in parathyroid pathology.
