Summary

Intersection syndrome, a wrist condition from repetitive motion, is uncommon, affecting 0.37% of patients with arm pain. Most cases resolve with conservative treatment, with no symptom recurrence observed in follow-up.

Background:

Intersection syndrome is an overuse injury affecting the wrist.
It is characterized by pain and swelling at the intersection of the first and second dorsal forearm compartments.
Repetitive radial deviation and thumb abduction are common inciting factors.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the prevalence of intersection syndrome.
To characterize demographic factors, symptoms, and treatment outcomes.
To assess the prognosis of patients diagnosed with intersection syndrome at Buriram Provincial hospital.

Main Methods:

A 4-year prospective study was conducted.
Included all inpatients and outpatients with new forearm and hand pain.

Data collected on diagnosis, symptoms, treatment, and follow-up outcomes.

Main Results:

Intersection syndrome prevalence was 0.37% among 8080 patients with arm/hand pain.
30 patients diagnosed: 73.3% had swelling, 40% crepitus.
Most patients were male farmers; 96.7% received conservative treatment (modified activities, NSAIDs).

Conclusions:

Intersection syndrome is an uncommon overuse injury.
It is associated with repetitive radial wrist deviation.
Conservative management leads to favorable outcomes with low recurrence rates.
