Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Head and Neck Surgery

Context:

  • Subtotal laryngectomy with epiglottoplasty is a surgical procedure for laryngeal cancer.
  • Effective visualization of the tumor is crucial for successful surgical outcomes.
  • Current techniques may present challenges in achieving optimal tumor exposure.

Purpose:

  • To describe a modification to the subtotal laryngectomy with epiglottoplasty technique.
  • To enhance the visualization of laryngeal tumors during surgery.
  • To facilitate tumor removal and subsequent laryngeal reconstruction.

Summary:

  • A novel modification involves accessing the larynx through the thyroid membrane.
  • This approach provides improved visualization of the tumorous area.
