Area of Science:
- Pediatric Gastroenterology
- Neonatal Medicine
- Child Abuse and Neglect
Background:
- Foreign body ingestion is a frequent occurrence in pediatric patients globally.
- Esophageal foreign bodies in neonates are exceptionally rare, presenting unique diagnostic and management challenges.
Observation:
- A neonate presented with an impacted esophageal foreign body, a highly unusual clinical scenario.
- The presentation deviated significantly from typical foreign body ingestion cases seen in older children.
Findings:
- The impacted esophageal foreign body in a neonate is an exceedingly uncommon event.
- This specific case suggests a potential indicator of a novel form of child neglect.
Implications:
- Highlights the need for heightened awareness of esophageal foreign bodies in neonates.
- Underscores the importance of considering child neglect in unexplained neonatal presentations.
- May prompt re-evaluation of diagnostic protocols for neonates with suspected foreign body ingestion.
Abstract:
