Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the precision of three different sampling devices (Cyclone, Mighty Mite, Readivac II) for indoor allergen measurement.
  • To evaluate the association between measured allergen exposure and serum-specific IgE levels in asthmatic children.
  • To identify a standardized sampling method for indoor allergens.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy-two children aged 5-17 with asthma participated, residing in the same home for at least two years.
  • Composite floor dust samples were collected simultaneously using Cyclone, Mighty Mite, and Readivac II samplers.
  • Concentrations of Der f I (dust mite), Fel d I (cat), and Bla g I (cockroach) allergens were measured, alongside serum-specific IgE levels.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in mean allergen concentrations were found across the three sampling methods.
  • Cat allergen (Fel d I) showed significant correlation with IgE for Cyclone and Mighty Mite samplers.
  • Dust mite allergen (Der f I) correlated significantly with IgE for Readivac II and Cyclone samplers. Cockroach allergen (Bla g I) did not correlate with IgE for any method. Cyclone and Mighty Mite were more precise for cat allergen than Readivac II.

Conclusions:

  • No single sampling method demonstrated superiority for measuring all indoor allergens.
  • The Cyclone sampler was a better predictor of cat allergen-specific IgE, while Readivac II was better for dust mite allergen-specific IgE.
  • Further research is needed to establish a universally standardized method for indoor allergen sampling.
