Summary

Alendronate does not interfere with bone scans. This study found that alendronate (a bisphosphonate) did not affect the uptake of technetium-99m-methylene diphosphonate (99mTc-MDP) in bone metastases.

  • To assess the effect of alendronate on tracer uptake in bone metastases.

  • Prospective study of 9 patients with hormone-refractory prostate cancer.
  • Quantitative whole-body bone scanning with 99mTc-MDP before and after alendronate administration.
  • Region-of-interest analysis to determine radioactivity in bone metastases.

Main Results:

  • Initial scans post-alendronate showed <6% increase in whole-body retention of 99mTc-MDP.
